What do formative assessments look like?
Formative assessments can take many forms ranging from written homework to oral participation in the classroom. The following are examples of formative assessment tasks through which the teacher can evaluate student progress in the world language classroom. • Paired communication activities about culture • Student responses to a teacher’s oral questions or comments • Short role plays of cultural situations • Student responses to songs or poems in the world language • Total Physical Response activities • Responding while reading or listening • Telling stories or providing descriptions • Creating maps, Venn Diagrams, or graphs • Daily writing in notebooks or journals • Mini-quizzes on language communication skills and culture • Informal discussions between student and teacher Is daily monitoring considered assessment? Yes! Daily monitoring can include anything from written student responses such as journal writing or notes to reflective responses based on a teacher’s frequent questioning
