What Do Electric Meters Measure?
Electric meters measure kilowatt hours using a small electromagnetic motor to judge how much electricity a particular house uses. Kilowatt hours are a measurement of electricity, based on how much energy one kilowatt uses when running for one hour. As electricity enters the house, it runs the small motor inside the meter, which then displays the power used on a dial or series of dials. Traditional electric meters were equipped with a series of mechanical dials and needed to be read by a meter man, but modern dials are digital and can transmit their readings automatically.
