What do carrots have to do with St. Mark Feast?
I have found this site about Lithuanian customs and traditions which claim’s as such: During the day People avoid touching the earth as if giving her a rest before the harvesting months – But there are several exceptions : One of them is that women sow carrots on this day, so that they grow larger and be tastier. Also it was customary that on this day, girls should eat only carrots – and it has something to do with fertility. p.c – I thought the holyday was a Sardinian tradition!
But of course! Many symbols which were cylinder shaped (especially those with a broad base) were considered phallic. A phallic symbol was connected with fertility that is rituals evolving such symbols (carrots for examples) were considered fertility boosting.
