What Do Canker Sores Look Like?
Cankers sores are known in medical terminology as aphthous ulcers. An aphthous sore, or a canker sore, is defined as a type of mouth ulcer. These aphthous ulcers or canker sores present painful open sores inside the mouths. These are caused by breaks in the mucous membranes. The condition of aphthous ulcers or canker sores is also known as aphthous stomatitis. It is also known as Sutton’s Disease. Sutton’s Disease is usually characterised by either multiple or recurring ulcers in the mouth. The term aphtha means ulcer. This term has been used for many years to describe the areas of ulceration which are present in the mucous membranes. Aphthous stomatitis is defined as a condition which is characterised by recurrence of ulcers in the discrete areas of ulceration. These ulcers are almost always painful. If the oral lesions persist or recur, the condition is then known as recurrent aphthous stomatitis, which is abbreviated as RAS.
