What do buddhists say when they chant?
When Buddhists chant, they either chant sutras or mantras. When Buddhists chant sutras, they chant words spoken (allegedly) by the Buddha. Some of these chants can be quite long and others fairly short. Example include the Heart Sutra (primarily chanted in the Mahayana tradition). When Buddhists chant mantras, they chant a string of syllables that may lack meaning but which are said to develop certain energies. There are many mantras, from short ones such as Om Mane Padme Hum, to much longer ones such as the Great Dharani.
