What do archaeologists eat while in the field ?

People who are fussy about their food and those who only like very specific things might sometimes find it a bit depressing on a dig in a foreign country. Once again, it depends on where you work et where you stay. Generally, in far away regions, we eat local products that are prepared by members of the archaeological mission or by a local cook. This therefore means that these meals are not what our Mom used to prepare for us !! The most difficult is to adapt yourself to the local dishes and products. Many archaeological missions will bring products from home with them – canned goods, pouches of soups and sauces, sausages, candies and treats (products that will not rot easily). Some missions live in a large city where restaurants are not too far — oh, lucky them !! As for me, I always bring granola bars and peanut butter with me… and the mission supplies pouches of soups and sauces, and some other little treats.
