What do alpacas need? An owner with the financial capability to make a sizable investment. Alpacas aren’t cheap. You cannot keep one alone, and your dog is not a suitable companion. You need at least 3. Depending where you live, you may also need a “guard llama” … don’t laugh … an alpaca is a sweet animal who will willingly follow anyone … a llama is NOT a sweet animal, and understands that his/her job is to protect the alpaca herd, primarily from theft. NO ONE messes with a llama! I’m no expert, but I do live in alpaca country, and I do know that raising/breeding/keeping alpacas is not a cheap hobby … you need a sizable cash outlay to get started, a good vet, and good luck be with you! They are not pets. PLEASE do extensive research before you decide to keep alpacas … they are valuable livestock, and you really shouldn’t venture into keeping them unless/until you are fully aware of and prepared for their needs.
