Summary: A panel of experts in the area of allergy diagnosis met in 1997 and concluded that the panel supported the use of well-standardized in vitro tests as an alternative to the use of skin testing. The workshop panel also supported selective use of in vitro testing by generalist physicians to effectively manage and properly refer patients to allergists for specialist care.
