The major distinction between the asthenosphere and the rest of the mantle is that the asthenosphere exhibits plastic behavior, meaning it has the properties of both a solid and a liquid. (Somewhat like silly putty.) Under stress it can flow without breaking. The asthenosphere is responsible for the unique tectonic behavior of the Earth. 2.
