What diseases are treated with stem cell transplantation?
So far, cord blood stem cells have been used to treat cancers, blood disorders, and genetic diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and aplastic anemia. (Cord blood is a potential source of stem cells for treatment of the same diseases currently associated with bone marrow stem cell transplants.) In the future, stem cells may he used in new therapies such as brain and spinal cord repair and treatments for heart disease and diabetes.
