What directors films have an abundance of sexism or racial stereotypes?
If you turn back to the films of the 30s and early 40s, you’ll find plenty of stereotypes, including racial, gender-based, sexually oriented, etc. For example, GONE WITH THE WIND is a magnificant film, but Butterfly McQueen as Prissy will make anyone’s teeth hurt. Almost all of D.W. Griffith’s films are rife with stereotypes, but two of his contemporaries, King Vidor and C.B. DeMille, tried to make all of their characters natural (didn’t work all the time, though). For black stereotypes, read Donald Bogle’s TOMS, COONS, MULATTOES, MAMMIES, AND BUCKS. For gay/lesbian stereotypes, try Vito Russo’s CELLULOID CLOSET. There are also excellent serious studies of Asian, Arab, and Native American stereotypes in book format.
