What direction should my ceiling fans spin?

in the winter your fan should draw warm air down from the ceiling to make the lower strata warmer and in the summer, it should lift warm air up off the floor to draw cool air in. However, in a closed room, the fan will always be mixing the strata of air in the room, whether it thrusts ceiling air down in the center, or displaces it to be pushed downward at the edges. my interpretation is, in a low ceiling application, the fan should always lift the air so it doesn’t blow the magazines off the coffee table, and in a high ceiling application, the fan MAY downdraft if you want to feel a perceptible breeze.
