What direction should ceiling fans go in the summer?
Generally, in the summer you want them to blow down creating a breeze. During the cooler months you want to pull the air up which pushes the air across the ceiling and down the walls to bring the warmer air down to you without creating a draft. As I look *up* at our fans, a counterclockwise rotation deflects the air down; clockwise deflects the air up. However, our situation in the bedroom is a little different. It has an eight foot ceiling with a flat roof and gets very hot during the summer afternoons. There are two windows high on the wall with venetian blinds. I have found (assuming that you’re not running an air conditioner) that running the fan in the ‘up’ mode air is pushed across the ceiling and is angled out the window by the blinds. The hot air that is lost out the window is replaced by cooler air coming through the door. For us this method works well because the evening temperature drops quite a bit and we don’t wake up in the middle of the night being blasted by cold air.
