It would depend. From most accounts all slaves were considered to be the same (as livestock) regardless of the slaves ethnicity (as all slaves where not black, contrary to popular belief.) Free blacks, especially those wealthy enough to own slaves themselves, were probably looked at much in the same manner as everyone else. OK now time for the real history lesson here.
