What did Vic do on the fight over the Bette White Dance Center?
In 2004, Vic worked successfully to save the Bette White Building when the current Township Committee wanted to tear it down. There could be no stronger contrast between the kind of patient, community-based preservation and revitalization pursued by Vic, and the high-handed quick fixes concocted by his opponents. Vic’s two opponents fought to tear down the Bette White Building, only backpedaling when citizen outcry became overwhelming. They then spent taxpayer money on a poll to tell them what Maplewood’s residents had already told them – that closing down a long-time beloved children’s dance center, forcing other successful businesses to move or close, and eliminating residential rental housing was not the way to ‘redevelop’ our community.
