Nice answer by emilyw. I would only add that as Governor of Virginia, Jefferson was nearly captured in the latter part of the Revolutionary War by Cornwallis during Britain’s “Southern Strategy”. That was the idea of trying to split the colonies from the South where there were many more Loyalists than there were in the North. Though the strategy produced a number of major victories it did not succeed as they had planned and led to Cornwallis’ surrender in 1781.
