What did the US use to overcome threat of German U-Boats?
The Allies also were ahead in radar and sonar, and were able to detect U-boats either on the surface or under the water. Depth charge attacks were improved with the invention of the headgehog. Destroyers also worked in teams, one locating the U-boat with sonor and directing the second to a correct attack position. U-boats had operated right of the American coast. Early in the war almost any aircraft that could fly would patrol the US coast. Training aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan were fitted with 500 Lb. bombs and flew along the coast. The AT-6 was not designed to be used as a bomber. U-boats had used the city lights to check their location and skyline their targets. Cities along the coast went into blackouts to help prevent such events. When more destroyers were needed the US built a smaller ship called a DE (destroyer Escort).
