Early in the war almost any aircraft that could fly would patrol the US coast. Training aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan were fitted with 500 Lb. bombs and flew along the coast. The AT-6 was not designed to be used as a bomber. U-boats had used the city lights to check their location and skyline their targets. Cities along the coast went into blackouts to help prevent such events. When more destroyers were needed the US built a smaller ship called a DE (destroyer Escort).
