What did the US use to overcome threat of German U-Boats?
The Allies also were ahead in radar and sonar, and were able to detect U-boats either on the surface or under the water. Depth charge attacks were improved with the invention of the headgehog. Destroyers also worked in teams, one locating the U-boat with sonor and directing the second to a correct attack position. U-boats had operated right of the American coast. Early in the war almost any aircraft that could fly would patrol the US coast. Training aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan were fitted with 500 Lb. bombs and flew along the coast. The AT-6 was not designed to be used as a bomber. U-boats had used the city lights to check their location and skyline their targets.
