What did the UK do to help resolve the situation in Lebanon?
Lebanon has been one of our top foreign policy concerns over the summer. The Foreign Secretary flew to New York on 10 August to work towards agreement on a UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) with international partners. This followed a period of intense diplomatic activity, in which the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Dr Howells, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, were all heavily engaged. Remaining issues of difference were resolved on 11 August and the Security Council agreed UNSCR 1701. We strongly welcome its adoption. The Foreign Secretary worked for an immediate and durable end to the violence. She led UK diplomatic efforts and was in close contact during the crisis with her counterparts in the region and across the world, and with the Prime Minister. We are now working to secure a lasting settlement. We will do all we can to help Lebanon move forward, to live in peace and prosperity with all its neighbours.
