What did the Submarine Service do in the Falklands War?
The Falklands War was an armed conflict between Argentina and Great Britain in 1982 over the ownership of the Falkland Islands, located in the South Atlantic Ocean off the Argentine coast. It was the culmination of a long running dispute for control of the islands between the two nations. Argentina was undergoing a period of economic crisis and civil unrest in 1982 whilst ruled by a military government known as the ‘Junta’, headed by General Leopoldo Galtieri. The government decided to reinforce their position by invading the islands, not expecting the British government to undertake a military response. Argentina began its invasion of the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982. There was much negotiation to try to end the dispute peacefully, but in the end Britain regained the Falklands by sending a large naval Task Force.
