The Sadducees were seen as heretics. They were NOT in the Sanhedrin- in fact we can see from the Talmud that the Sanhedrin passed a lot of laws in order to block the heresies of the Sadducees and to ensure they were kept out of positions of power in religious life as much as they could. The Sadduccees on their part tended to ingratiate themselves with the secular authorities in ordert to try and gain power that way. They dissapeared shortly after the destruction of the Second Temple and a complete absence of a power base or legitimacy- but enjoyed a brief resurgence in the 8th century in the Karaite movement which was essentially the same as the Sadduccee beliefs.
