Nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was abducted and murdered in 1996. Her case spawned a voluntary law-enforcement partnership that activates an urgent bulletin during the most serious child abductions. “Once they are abducted, if there are indications that danger will occur normally it happens within only a few hours,” says Enterprise Police Captain Mike Lolley. In 2008, 194 Amber Alerts were issued across the country. The children in 85 percent of those cases were recovered. 40 of them were a direct result of the Amber Alert system.
