What did the medieval princesses do?
A medieval princess would be raised to expect to make a marriage with a prince or king, or powerful nobleman, princesses were important for forging alliances with other countries. She would recieve a good education, in order to help her fulfill the role of queen, which could be a demanding one in medieval times. Some princesses became nuns, in the early medieval period in particular some very powerful abbesses were nuns, like Hildegarde of Bingen for instance, who presided over the Synod of Whitby in the 7th century. Princesses were sometimes sent to be educated in religious houses even if they were not going to become nuns, as nuns, especially in the early medieval period, were often highly educated. However, some princesses who were educated in religious houses were not happy there.
