What did the Feasibility Study Determine?
The Ralph C. Mahar Regional School will be 43 years old this coming year. The facility serves both middle and high school students in grades 7-12 and has a current enrollment of 765 students. By 2004, enrollment is projected to increase to a high of over 1100 students. The need for additional space is serious and will become severe in the next few years. The age of the facility is an issue as well. The building stands virtually the same as it was originally built with the exception of minor modifications to some of the classrooms and the addition of four (4) portable “temporary” classrooms in 1968. The educational use of the facility has changed remarkably since it was designed and constructed. The intervening 43 years have brought many changes that have an impact on the current capacity of the school including: Massachusetts Education Reform Act, special needs regulations, introduction of computers, need for project space, teaching space requirements and housing the Central Office.
