What did the Britons do when the Romans left Britian in AD 407?
The Romans never really left. Many retired legionaries had been awarded land in Britain as part of their pension, had married local women and had been assimilated into the local population. Many of the troops weren’t Roman but auxiliaries recruited from Spain and Gaul. In effect what happened was that over an extended period of time the Administrators and senior commanders were recalled to Gaul and Italy with their attendant retinues and bodyguards. Some Legions were recalled on block, however they were initially replaced by local troops on the frontiers with Scotland and Wales. So in essence there was a gradual thinning of the Roman presence to a point where finally the Central Administration broke down and Geographic areas once again became self governing, however remember that the British tribal leaders had become Romanised, liking and appreciating the Roman way of life, the villas and baths etc. so in terms of the way people lived nothing much would have changed.
