What did that picture of the Suns spectral fingerprint mean?
This (also shown on p. 145 of your text) is the visible light spectrum of the Sun taken using a precise spectroscope, and showing a complex structure of absorption lines (read frequency left to right, wrapping lines, like text). These lines are due to various substances in the solar atmosphere, and their characteristic patterns are what allow us to know the composition of the Sun.
