Sri Lankan troops have uncovered one of their biggest hauls of weapons and explosives since the defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels two months ago, military officials said on Friday. Troops found 332 roadside bombs in the northeastern district of Mullaittivu where Tamil Tiger supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran put up his last stand in May, a military official said. He said the bombs weighing up to 18 kilos (40 pounds) were found at the village of Vellamullivaikal, a coastal area where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leadership was holed up in the final stages of the war. Sri Lankan troops conducting search and de-arming operations in the areas of North liberated from the LTTE found a massive haul of bombs, explosives, ammunitions and other weapons, the military reported. Intelligence and security sub groups operating under Army’s 56 Division found 332 claymore mines of various sizes buried in the Vellamullivaikkal area of Mullaitivu. Among the war materials unearthed were also five thermo-baric weapons, and 15 kg of C4 high explosives. Meanwhile Task Force-8 soldiers clearing the general area Puthukkudyiruppu East found, six claymore mines, one suicide jacket, 92 RPG bombs, and nine RCL bombs among other things. The 59 Division and the Task Force-2 soldiers during searches conducted in the Mullaitivu area found 182 AP mines, three pressure mines, 131 hand grenades and loads of ammunition and other bomb accessories.
