What did MOUNTBATTEN do to IRELAND?
Curious question. I get the feeling maybe you already know the answer to that. In a word, nothing. Lord Mountbatten never had any ill feelings towards the Irish or Ireland as a country. He was on a holiday in the north western part of the country, when he decided to go for a trip on his yacht. An Garda Siochana, the Irish police, warned him that as he was a member of the royal family, he was considered a “legitimate” target for the IRA and he was not safe where he was staying. Legitimate in the IRA’s opinion I might add, not by Ireland as a nation. Bundoran, in County Donegal was a popular area for the IRA and its sympathisers at the time and was near to where Mountbatten’s yacht was moored. Two other people were murdered that day, an 83 year old woman and two teenage boys. A memorial service was later held in Dublin for Mountbatten and was attended by our then President, Patrick Hillery and our Taoiseach Jack Lynch (The Irish equivalent of a Prime Minister). It’s not so much what this
