What did Julius cesar do?

Gaius Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC because he had himself made “dictator for life” & some in the senate feared he was going to make himself King & put an end to the Roman Republic. His great nephew Octavius would become the first “Emperor” (& take the name Augustus) & put an end to the Republic in 23 BC but he allowed some Republican institutions to remain which was more acceptable to the Roman people. Edit: Caesar was known to annihilate entire tribes of Gauls during the Gallic wars, old men, women & children & all… this type of genocide would be considered crimes by our standards today but that wasn’t considered a crime to the ancient Romans, after all, the Gauls were nothing but barbarians to them.
