Mussolini was working closely with Hitler throught the 1930’s, he sent a lot of troops and supplies to help the Nationalists in Spain and was building an empire in Africa. He stayed on the sidelines during Hitler’s invasions in 1939-40, only joining in against France on June 10th, when they were pretty much beaten. He was hoping to get his hands on some choice real estate, but Hitler concluded the Vichy France deal to neutalise the French navy and colonial forces, leaving him short changed. In North Africa he pressured the generals there into attacking Egypt from Libya, they advanced about 120km to Sidi Barrani and then dug in. The British, despite being outnumbered about 6:1 walked over them and rolled all the way to El Aghelia (about 1300km). They also attacked Greece from Albania, which caused Hitler a great deal of problems. The Italian attacks failed miserably!
