Hitler contravened the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. The Allies – Britain, America, France and Russia implemented the sanctions as punishment for Germany fighting against them in WW1. They were: 1.) Demilitarization of the armed – forces. Germany was only permitted to have 100,000 men to defend herself. 2.) Foreign occupation of the Rhineland. 3.) The enforced repayment of astronomical economic reparations. 4.) Great swathes of German land was gifted to other nations. Malmedy went to Belgium, Alsace – Lorraine became part of France, and the West Posen region and part of Prussia was donated to Poland. This highly integral piece of land also included parts of her limited, crucial coast – line. Hitler felt that Germany was humiliated and demoralalized as a result of this. He also believed that in the future there would not be enough land for the population to naturally increase and live as a direct consequence of point 4.
