I don’t think he had to do anything. The Battle of Stalingrad was particularly brutal and the Nazi forces actively targeted Russian civilians. Both sides treated POWs from each others’ countries horribly. The Russians were noted for their “vicious treatment” of German prisoners of war. At the end of WWII German prisoners were used to rebuild Russia, many didn’t survive the experience. Many of the German soldiers probably favored a bullet over what the Russians would have done to them. Image: German POWs paraded in Moscow.
