What did ghandi achieve?
Ghandi did not achieve independence for India, that was on the cards anyway as Empire was becoming an obsolete idea, and WW2 just about finished it off. India was partitioned, which I’m sure was the last thing he would have wanted, amid much violence between Muslims and Hindus. Ghandi was a great idealist, but like all great idealists his vision of a better world came to nothing because there will always be total lowlifes crawling out from under their rocks looking to make a profit out of any idea that comes along. His legend exists mostly on the fact that he did all his peaceful protesting under the British Empire, and British justice allowed him free speech to a great extent, in fact the British bent over backwards to not appear to victimise him. Can you imagine a similar figure in, say, Nazi occupied France?
