Yes, he was the winning officer at the Battle of New Orleans, where his troops defeated the British. What no one knew at the time however, was that the war was over at the time of the battle, a peace treaty had been signed in Europe weeks earlier, but because of slow communication in 1812, nobody knew it. Jackson was considered a hero nonetheless.
