Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Chi Sigma Omega Chapter, through its charitable arm, Spirited Pearls Foundation, will host a Martin Luther King Day Celebration and Clothing Drive in Bolingbrook. At a new location, the annual clothing drive will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 18 at the Bolingbrook Community Center, 241-B Canterbury Lane in Bolingbrook. The event honors King’s legacy and is a part of the sorority’s international program, which is dedicated to service to all mankind, sorority leaders said. Due to growth of the annual celebration, Chi Sigma Omega Chapter moved the clothing drive from the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex to the Bolingbrook Community Center. Additionally, changes to the event include a new video presentation of little-known stories from the civil rights movement that will play throughout the day. Sorority Vows to Help with Relief to Haiti President urges members to give generously & prepare for a long commitment In an outreach to members, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s International President Barbara A. McKinzie appealed to members to contribute to relief efforts for Haiti, in the wake of the “catastrophic earthquake that has devastated…this already-struggling nation.” She said it is a catastrophe that has “profoundly saddened” the Sorority. She directed members to make contributions to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority with a notation that the check be directed toward Haiti Relief. In turn, the Sorority will log in all monies and then turn the contributions over to CARE, an AKA partner whose mission to provide relief to countries in distress mirrors the current need in Haiti.
