What diameters would work for a round pen?
60 feet is the best size. I like small gaps between the upper boards (2 x 6) because I like people to be able to see in (to watch and for safety) and I like to address the fact the the horse has to pay attention to me and not to his environment right from the beginning. The lower 2.5 feet is solid so that the horse can never put a hoof through even if they kick and so and the round pen footing doesn’t shift out. My round pen is 5′ 6″ high. Make sure that you put the posts on the outside and the smooth boards on the inside so that they won’t catch themselves on a post. My gates are an aluminum frame for lightness with the same boards with the same spacing as the rest of the round pen. I have a double gate and one side has a drop rod so that it stays put when I go in and out with a horse using the other half. I open both gates to drive in with the tractor to drag.
