What details are on the DVD Extra Esther Williams Volume 2?
DVD Extra: Esther Williams, Volume 2 Warner Home Video, which hasn’t been premiering a lot of new catalog titles on pressed DVDs lately, today is offering not only the Karloff-Lugosi set (see below) but “TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams Volume 2.” Like most second volumes, this is a mixed bag, in this case containing six Technicolor musicals of varying quality with the ever-charming swimming actress Williams. Richard Thorpe’s “Thrill of a Romance” (1945) is a followup to Esther’s phenomenally successful “Beauty Beauty” (MGM’s No. 3 top grosser to that point, released in the first DVD set) most notable, if that’s the word, for the screen debut of Wagnerian tenor Lauritz Melchoir, who producer Joe Pasternak tried to turn into a singing S.Z. Sakall. “This Time for Keeps,” also directed by Thorpe, is pretty much the same movie except that Van Johnson is unfortunately replaced by limp crooner Johnny Johnston.
