In his earlier years Solomon was content with asking for wisdom and guidance from God. Later he tried to use man’s wisdom and systems to gain favor, treaties and alliances with these other nations. Even the wisest man on earth walked away from God’s best. He took what was God’s plan and replaced it with man’s opinion and methods and each step was towards a cliff. It could be summarized like this: Take what you want, don’t miss any pleasure and you’ll be happy.
