What deity, if any, do Buddhists worship?
First off, most of us (if not all of us) do not worship Buddha (in case anyone was wondering). I, like many Buddhists, am an atheist. Some of us are agnostics, atheists, monotheists, polytheists, you name it. The reason for such a diverse amount of beliefs and disbelief is that Buddhism (in general) is not about worshipping any gods. Even though there may be some sects that worship divine beings, this is not an essential Buddhist practice. In fact, when Buddhists do worship some god it is sometimes because those Buddhists also consider themselves adherents to an additional religion or set of beliefs. There are Christian Buddhists, Jewish Buddhists, Wiccan Buddhists, etc. Since Buddhism focuses on different themes from most religions, it is highly compatible with other religions. There is no Buddhist god in the sense that there is a Christian god. However, the gods worshipped in some heavily Buddhist areas are often called Buddhist gods even though those gods might have been worshipped
