What defines Gothic Literature?
It can have that setting, but Gothic literature can take place in any setting as long as it has some characteristics. Take for example, Flannery O’Conner. She wrote southern Gothic literature. This just means that it took place in the south and usually had dark themes and characters which she deemed “grotesques” because they had something peculiarly wrong about them. They actually did not deal with the supernatural. She usually used Catholic themes. What we think about in fashion as “Gothic” is not applied here. In earlier times we would find a dark setting such as a castle and vampires. But the stereotype does not always apply at all times in history. In modern times we do see some Gothic literature as such. It basically combines elements of horror, darkness, or romance. Hope I could help!
