ECM is built on ObjectStore from Progress Software, the same database that is used by Amazon.com and many other large applications. Using an object-oriented database has significant performance benefits over a relational database when acting on the large tree structures often found in ECM. Many ECM product structures are in excess of 10,000 lines and the object-oriented database means that large tables, which degrade performance, are not required.
