What customs are often practiced when a Nigerian dies?
Sacrifices, food, and cloth are often given in behalf of the spirit of a dead man. People may fear the spirit and offer it gifts for many days. After three days it is a custom to wake the spirit into heaven. An operation is sometimes performed to cut out the portion which caused disease so that the re-incarnated body will be well. Second-burial celebrations are common traditions. Mourning ceremonies and practices claim to appease the spirit of the dead.
