What currently happens to wine and spirit containers in London and how will the Deposit Return Program change this?

We currently recycle about 75 – 80 per cent of these containers through the recycling program. In 2006 we recycled approximately 3,050 tonnes of glass wine and spirit containers. The remaining containers or roughly 750 to 950 tonnes were placed in the garbage by residents and ended up in London’s landfill. It is unclear what impact the Deposit Return Program will have on the quantity of containers in our recycling program. We will be monitoring the quantities closely.
