What criteria should be used to select a degree program in music?
The selection of a specific degree program is determined, to a large extent on career plans. The B.M.E. degree prepares the student to teach in public schools in Missouri. The program of study contains seven semesters of required course work, with the eighth semester devoted to student teaching off campus. The B.M. degree is sought by students wishing to perform with established professional orchestras, bands, or choirs or wishing to teaching at the college/university level. In most cases, these students will begin the Master of Music degree in performance immediately upon graduation at another institution and may well strive eventually to complete the doctoral degree in music.
