What country is most responsible for the destruction of the Amazon rainforest?
Brazil (who’s borders contain much of the Amazon rainforest) is doing the same thing every other country has done. They are using the natural resources within their own borders to build their economic prosperity. You really can’t blame them for that. I don’t think you can really blame any individual country. We now have a global economy and if the US didn’t buy products connected to the rainforest some other country would. The key, now that we are starting to understand the global impacts of natural resource use, is to find a solution. Simply telling Brazil that they must stop logging certainly isn’t a fair solution (not as long as we allow Saudi Arabia to continue to prosper from oil). The solution, IMO, is to invest heavily and quickly into new sustainable energy sources (not those requiring us to use all our farming land for ethanol) and make those technologies available to the world.
who is actually doing the logging in the Amazon? So no I do not agree with Greenpeace. If they truly cared, they would be trying to improve the countries in South America and show them how to do responsible logging. instead of just trying to raise money from people in the USA while raising an alarm. Besides, I think most of the USA’s wood now comes from China. Efforts from ‘green’ groups like Greenpeace have mostly stopped logging in the USA’s Pacific Northwest…logging that was controlled and had tree replanting (trees are a renewable resource…a harvest crop)…by stopping the logging here, the stupid groups just promoted the foreign countries to log irresponsibly. At one time, I think Greenpeace was actually a good organization, but now I think they’re all about the money and they’re main racket is ‘the usa is bad’ ‘give us money’.
