What countries in Europe were involved in World War II?
Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria. Canada, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, France, Free French Forces, Vichy France, Germany, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaya, Malta, Manchukuo, Mexico, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Nauru, Nepal, Netherlands, Netherlands East Indies, Newfoundland, New Zealand,Nicaragua, Northern Rhodesia, Norway, Oman, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Macau, Portuguese Timor, Romania, Samoa,American Samoa, San Marino,Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Soviet Union /
UK, France (until the German invasion, then it’s complicated), and Poland (though invaded) were on one side in 1939. Germany and Italy were on the other. Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Norway were all neutral, as was Switzerland and Spain, although Franco, dictator of Spain was totally on Hitler and Mussolini’s side but stayed out. Portugal was also neutral. All of the northern European Countries except Sweden and Switzerland that were neutral were invaded by Germany. Russia had been officially neutral until it was invaded by Germany in 1940, also. Finland had been in a war with Russia before the actual war started, I’m not sure where they were. The Republic of Ireland (Eire) was neutral but Diblin was actually bombed on at least one occasion by German bombers. Belfast, part of the UK was hit by bombs from Germany.
The following had some form of neutrality, either by declaration of neutrality or by not declaring war. Andorra Argentina Denmark (occupied, but never declared war) Egypt (government never declared war) Iceland Ireland Liechtenstein Luxembourg (occupied, but government never declared war) “Spanish” Morocco and the city of Tangier Portugal Macao Saudi Arabia Spain Sweden Switzerland I only listed the ones I was sure of. Some had some degree of economic ties to one or the other — Axis or Allies — but all were “neutral”.
Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ireland were neutral. Finland fought against the USSR and ended up allied with Germany. Italy was allied with Germany. All the Balkan countries were invaded and/or cooperated with Germany. Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France were conquered by Germany. The United Kingdom stood alone (with its colonies and Commonwealth countries like Canada) for the Allies until Pearl Harbor when the US joined the war. Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco, and Vatican City were under Axis control (Germany and/or Italy). I am not sure about Andorra, though.
