My brother and I drove to Iowa from Oregon in 1965. We had a ’56 Olds 88 coupe that had just been repainted midnight blue. That car floated down the road, including over the Rockies and across the plains where the end of the road disappeared straight over the horizon. On the way back, passing through Sacramento, on the overpass headed west out of town, the engine started knocking. It got increasingly worse, so we pulled off at the next exit and found a car repair shop within two blocks. He thought it might just be a problem with one of the pulleys. After a night in the motel across the street, we came back to the mechanic, who had his hat in hand. He said, “Sorry, but I found a piston in the crankcase. I’ll only charge you a hundred bucks, and you can leave the car here if you want. I wish now we would have had it towed to the Olds dealer and had the engine rebuilt.
