What could cause a male llama to attack our sheep?
Is he an intact male? If so, that is your answer. Intact adult males should never be trusted with sheep or goats. Most likely he did not “attack” the sheep, but rather tried to breed it. Male llamas will bite the legs and jump on them to get them to lay down for breeding, and once they do lay down they mount them and can suffocate them. That is NORMAL behavior for an intact, adult male, and does not mean that he is berserk, mean, or dangerous in any way…..he just never should have been left alone with smaller animals. ONLY females and males that have been gelded before the age of sexual maturity (usually around 2 years) make appropriate guardians.
