What could be wrong if the speedometer stopped working and the transmission will not shift?

This happened to me a couple years ago in a Dodge Caravan. The problem was the speedometer sensing unit. When it goes bad, the automatic transmission defaults to a “safe” mode where it stays in second gear. It was a long, slow drive out of the mountains and back into town and the transmission shop, but I was sure glad to hear it was just a sensor (less than $100 including labor) and not a transmission problem.
