Whale Wars on Discovery Channel Animal Planet will return for a second season on June 5. The adventure series records the efforts of The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society seeks to shut down the Japanese whaling industry, at great danger to themselves. Even though there is an international moratorium on whaling, Japanese whalers have continued to hunt the magnificent marine animals in the ocean. Japan and the Moratorium on Commerical Whaling In 1986 Japan withdrew opposition to the International Whaling Commission’s (ICW) moratorium on commercial whaling. The following year Japan announced a large-scale scientific whaling program that was purportedly designed to assess whale stocks. Japan’s stated goal was the resumption of commercial whaling with set, sustainable limits.
