What continent does russia officially belong to?
A small portion of Russia is geographically part of Europe. This portion contains most of the population. Culturally, Russia seems to be its own beast. Until the time of Peter the Great, Russia was essentially isolated from Europe, and Europeans considered it a country of savages. Beginning with Peter, Russians craved European approval as a sign that they had arrived in the modern world. That has translated into the a Russian obsession with all things European, and with making sure that they are considered to be “European.” The idea that they’re culturally European is fairly dubious, however, in light of history.
